It all started in 1896, when Henry Ford reached a top speed of 20MPH in a Quadricycle. We all knew what Ford did to change the world of motorsports till today. Through years of heart pumping performance showed to the world by the Ford motorsports division have made an impact to the world. From the world of rally to track racing and now becoming a Youtube superstar on Ken Blocks show. Well Ford really made an impact to world with their aggressive attack to regain their pride and joy. Ford have stomped their presents in the world of NASCAR, rally, NHRA, United Sportscar Championship, V8 Supercar, World GT1 and GTs, Touring car, Formula Drift, Formula Ford and much more.

We are here today to dissect the Torco Ford Focus Race Car. First and foremost, the first generation Ford Focus was introduced to the world in 1998 following up by the second generation in 2004 and the now Ford Focus is in his third generation from 2011 till present. Last summer in 2012, Ford launched the Ford Focus ST, which had 247 horsepower from a 2.0L turbocharged eco boosted engine and the third generation face lifted model showed to the world in 2014 Geneva Motor Show.

As for this Torco Ford Focus, it’s naturally aspirated from a 1.6L Ti-VCT engine with a torque at 4000NM and producing groundbreaking 8000ps max power. This beast is shifting through an ATB limited slip-differential with a special gear ratio.

A car that runs in endurance races surely needs good braking system to last for the whole race. The braking set up for this Torco Ford Focus will be a set of 290mm Alcon Racing Monoblock with Pagid brake pads for the front and as for the rear, its fitted in with a 260mm Alcon Racing Monoblock brake and also with Pagid brake pads. 

With durable braking support, surely it needs a tough suspension setting to support the hard braking inertia while slicing through apex corners, this Torco monster it’s fitted in with Nitron 3 way multi-link suspension for the front and rear end. This Focus also fitted with Macpherson struts, custom anti-roll bars, Spherical bearing on all joints and lastly with welded T45 Cromoli steel safety roll cage with custom fabrication.

The busy man with his beast

He had an idea, he is also a student, who also started a Vapor cigarette company where he will be mixing his own recipes and flavors, and he have started a clothing brand cult, while holding onto another full time job on top of that. In his “downtime”, he builds an awesome car. Does that sound like something you would do?
Well, it was what Robert Kochis did and continues to do with his 2013 Toyota FR-S along with his Stay Crushing brand.  This guy is an animal. How does he have any spare time? Trying to schedule this shoot with him was a challenge to say the least. Somehow he found a couple hours for me. And for that I am very grateful.

After discussing online a few shoot locations near him, we agreed on hitting up the Azusa Canyon up Highway 39. After a couple of last minute date changes, I finally had him locked down for an early Friday morning shoot. This would be cutting it close for my deadline but I knew the results would be worth the cram session in front of me.

We met about an hour away up in West Covina, CA overlooking the San Gabriel Mountain foothills for a cup of Joe and then headed to our shoot location. Winding through the town, I was beginning to wonder if he was trying to lose me just as my phone rang.

It was Rob.

“Sorry Johan. This car of mine is so low, I have to take a path that won’t have me laying frame all over town.”
Robert’s car is a daily driver and by driving it so often, he has found his own special route to where ever he is heading. I do suppose that a safe route is a good thing to know to not only save his precious machine but also know where to avoid any unwanted looks from Johnny Law. It was multiple run ins with the police that lead him to the fine folks at Borla. He had put in a lot of thought into this build and how everything would work together but the straight pipes he was running initially did not go over so well with local noise ordinances. Borla helped him come up with the perfect solution that provides all the benefits that a great exhaust system should.  Witnessing his car rip through town, you can tell they definitely delivered maximum torque and horsepower with a superior tone.
While Rob’s hands were involved in a lot of this build, he says it took an army of companies to help make it the beast it is today. With 35 companies to be precise and he wear each of their names proudly upon his rear window. He hopes all of them are as satisfied as he is with the final result.
There was a method to Robert’s madness. He purchased the car new a whole month before it was even available. Robert started sending out proposals in March of 2012.  He was sourcing and organizing the build by May of 2012 and is still massaging the machine almost three years later.  When asked why he chose the Toyota over the Subaru version, he answered that it was more than just a cost savings. He preferred the Rocket Bunny body kit and wanted to help market the brand to the public.

The body kit is what Robert believes gets his car so much attention. Unfortunately, he went through hell to finally get his hands on one. There were two different delays that took two months each as the shipping company struggled to get it through customs.
When it finally came time to do the paint and body work, Robert self cut the frame and body to get the basics done and then handed off to Platinum VIP in Irwindale to complete all of the fit and finish work. Upon return, he cut even more away from the frame and inner fender liner for maximum clearance
The car is a solid performer. I can testify to this as I witnessed it disappear out of my windshield once we hit the winding canyon passes. Robert gives a lot of credit to Jeff at Jordan Innovations. Jeff installed the Vortech supercharger as well as helped provide shop space when not at Platinum VIP to work on the FR-S.
Pop the VIS hood and you see eveerything is covered in carbon fiber to give it a clean high-end appearance. Almost like a jewelry box to showcase the Vortech supercharger
California Car Culture is apparent all over this machine. Go to a car show and you will be amazed at how people mix-and-match their own creations. You can tell that was a big influence with Robert. He combined the hot rod, low rider and the import scene to make this car a perfect hybrid of each.  
Anybody can build a racecar and swap out parts as they break. It is truly impressive to take that same race tech from the track and bring it to the street in the form of a daily driver. Robert Kochis has done just that.

The Honda Civic is hugely respected among the most avid Honda Civic lovers and JDM fanatics. Any car fanatic who knows his (or her) stuff will recognize and acknowledge a Civic for its unique characteristic. The reputation of the Civic is simply immense, such that whenever anyone talks about Honda, ninety-nine times out of a hundred the first Honda that is mentioned will be a Honda Civic or a Honda Civic TypeR.

Ever wonder why the Civic is so popular? Well, for one thing it has everything you could and would want from a Japanese Domestic Market car. Also it is considerably affordable to purchase and reasonably cheap to run. And of course, there’s the matter of parts – the Civic’s spare parts are readily available the world over, and with I should add, strictly controlled prices.

This particular Civic model that we’re featuring from Singapore has made a huge impact in the world of tuning even to this day – the model in question is the EG6 Civic; one of the forerunner in sizzling speedy hatches way back when. In this segment the EG6 in question is quite inordinately simple, at least aesthetically. But as the saying goes ‘looks can be deceiving’, and it is ever so true for this Honda. The fancy name for the vinyl job – Grigio Medio Telegrey appears quite distinctive in a subtle manner, and Leonard (the proud petrol head who owns this EG6) have only gone with a few exterior mods that accentuates not overwhelm the finish.

 This naturally aspirated grey hatchback runs a Honda B16A engine block coupled to an EK9 Type-R top engine head and cams. The B-series is made of a family of inline four cylinders Dual overhead cams (DOHC) that were introduced in 1989, and it was primarily built for performance, with dual overhead cams, along with the first application of Honda’s vicious cult-status VTEC system.

With the relatively bigger power output in this small compact hatchback, it is transmitting its power from a 4.4 final drive original gearbox with close ratio for gear 3,4 and 5. To further improve power delivery, this EG6’s gearbox is fitted in with clutch and flywheel from a Honda EK9.

Small, light, fast and it surely needs to stop somehow. The choice for brake pads in this Honda EG6 is a set of high temperature pads produce by Elig, which is made up of ceramic material and heat resistance up to 600 Celsius with an average friction co-efficient of 0.38-0.45. These brake pads are made for field and street driving usage, and in Leonard’s Civic the pads are matched unto a pair of Honda Prelude brake calipers.

Complimenting the uprated brakes, the standard suspension is replaced with a set of high performance D2 Super Street Racing Coilovers, along with a set of Hardrace camber kits and control arm support, and further enhanced with the fitment of Beak tie bars. Finally, a pair of TE37 15” x 8 for the front and a pair of Enkei RPF1 15” x 7 is been tightly hugged with a set of Yokohama Advan AD08R (195/50/15) to further support the braking motion.

As we dissected the interior, you’d notice that this EG6’s interior is nearly original with apart from – a DC2R cluster and a lovely set of SparcoEvo bucket seat along with a lovely steering wheel produced by Sparco.
